The Sovereignty of God

UV 382/10,000 Romans 9 v 15 The Sovereignty of God Rom 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. The Lord ‘s will prevails in all matters. It might seem for a time that all on earth can do as they please or as the Nike ad puts it “ Just do it”. But, the Lord’s Word says, “ Don’t just do it but do the just.” He is the Rock of eternity. When we act against His will we are knocking our fragile selves against the Rock. His will is sovereign and supreme. The word “ sovereign “ means pure, precious, of ultimate and absolute value. The sovereignty of God means that He has the discretion to show mercy and favour upon who He chooses. He raised up Pharaoh to harden the latter’s heart against the Israelites to reveal His power through Moses. He raised up Moses by redeeming him from the slaughter of Hebrew infants and caused him to be brought up in the royal household of Pharaoh himself. He caused Pharaoh’s daughter to show compassion upon the floating baby. He caused Moses to be driven out of Pharaoh’s household to be broken in the wilderness of his life. He brought him back to lead the Hebrew slaves of Egypt out of bondage back to the promised land. Today, the mighty Pharaoh is a nameless, faceless and despised despot while Moses is a revered, oft remembered Biblical hero, a type of the Messiah to come. Likewise, the Lord hardens the hearts of those He chooses to. Many of those who have hardened their hearts against us are those whom the Lord has allowed to do so for a purpose. It is for the raising up of the staff and the crushing of the head of the serpent for the lifting up of the name of God. We can resist the devil and he will flee. But, we cannot resist the will of God for He means no ill to us. He delights in pouring His mercy and grace to the point of overflowing in those who chooses to be vessels of mercy. Prateep V Philip
